Best MTG Writer 2020

Elizabeth Rice, also known as Ellie of the Veil, has been doing all things Magic related since 2014. Although the highlight of her playing career was competing at Mythic Championship VII, she is better known for her work as a podcast editor, writer, and streamer. You can see her work on Channel Fireball and Cardsphere.

Joseph Dyer (Volrathxp) writes Magic: the Gathering content focusing on eternal formats such as Legacy and Vintage in addition to Magic Lore. His work can be found on MTGGoldfish and CardSphere.

Lawrence Harmon is a Magic theorist who specializes in analyzing metagames and tuning decks for those metagames. He has contributed to many winning decks in multiple formats and values intellectual honesty.

Jason Alt is one of the hardest working MTG Finance writers in the business. With a column appearing on Coolstufff Inc. in addition to MTG Price, he is also a member of the Brainstorm Brewery finance podcast and a writer and administrator for EDHREC’s content website. 

Kristen Gregory is the Content Manager and a writer for Hipsters of the Coast, writer for Card Kingdom and the Script Supervisor for Tolarian Community College.

Jay Annelli is a Vorthos (lore) writer, consultant for Wizards of the Coast, and co-host of The Vorthos Cast.

Jay began writing articles in 2015 and is widely known as the authority for MTG lore. Jay’s work includes Magic: the Gathering: Legends : A Visual History and the soon to be released Magic: The Gathering: Planes of the Multiverse: A Visual History. A stalwart of the Northeast Magic scene, Bryan Gottlieb has been playing Magic for over twenty years. While he has seen his share of Grand Prix and Pro Tour success, he is better known in pro circles as a deckbuilder and theorist. Bryan is a co-host of @arenadecklists Podcast, broadcaster for @SCGTour, and writer for StarCityGames.

Brian Allen is a proud father, writer, actor/comedian and streamer. He has over 20 years of gaming coverage experience and has written for sites including GamerTell, Gameworld Network, Undefeated Magazine and Cardsphere.

Emma Partlow is a writer and co-host of The Budget Magic Cast. She loves helping players dive into Magic’s diverse non-rotating formats.

Dan Bosco a.k.a. Moderately Anonymous MTG writes blogs about everything from MTG strategy, to why you should use proxies, and why Magic requires good sportsmanship. He also stream cEDH, Vintage, Legacy, casual EDH, and Historic on Twitch that you can find on his YouTube.

Dan currently lives in Philadelphia and works as a freelance editor and writer. His article Magic is a Sport and Requires Good Sportsmanship is nominated for Best Article 2020. His blog can be found here.

Bennie Smith began playing Magic in 1994 and started writing about it shortly after. A Virginia State Champion, he enjoys few things better than winning at tournaments with home brews. Commander is one of those things. He loved the format so much he literally wrote the book on it: The Complete Commander.

Dante Buccieri is the resident comic book savant of The Geek Embassy. He’s been reading comics for as long as he can remember, and now that he’s a librarian he gets to advocate for comics in libraries and get paid for it. He’s also a tabletop gaming fan, especially those that involve cards, with favorites including Sentinels of the Multiverse, Magic: The Gathering, Bang!, Smash Up, Star Realms, and 7 Wonders. Dante is a library professional at University of Oregon in Eugene, OR and his article from IntoThe99.com Top 15 Commanders from 2020! is nominated for Best MTG Article for 2020.

Barry White, Editor-in-Chief for Magic Untapped, has been playing Magic: The Gathering since the summer of 1994. A veteran journalist with 15 years of network affiliate experience, he strives to bring high quality, original content to the Magic: The Gathering community by exploring the game’s history and lore.

Spice8Rack aka Connor Macleod aka the purveyor of spice…makes MTG videos unlike any you’ve ever seen. Two-time winner at last-year’s MTGCCAs, Connor never ceases to surprise, enlighten and entertain. This year he has 2 videos nominated for Best MTG Video. I gave every Magic: the Gathering Planeswalker a Fursona and Anarchism & Police Abolition Featuring Domri Rade.

Gamer, cosplayer, streamer, video producer, and all around awesome fabulous human being, Zenaide Beckham has done it all and is probably one of the most versatile content creators in the business. Her video, I Like Big Buttons is nominated this year for Best MTG Video.

Pixie Kitten Plays and is a cohost of the “Magic for Normies” show with Zuby. She enjoys making silly comedy videos, acting like a fool, and having a fun time! Speaking of acting a fool…this year her video Who is the biggest VILLIAN in Magic the Gathering? is nominated for Best MTG Video.

Best MTG Artist 2020 (Market)

Víctor Adame Mínguez, is a fantasy and sc-fi Illustrator from Mexico who specializes in imaginative fiction. He has worked for book covers, magazines, card games and more.

He is nominated for Best MTG Artist of 2020. His work can be found through Gatherer, ArtStation, or through Twitter and Instagram.

Seb McKinnon is a Canadian freelance illustrator, filmmaker, and musician. In 2012, McKinnon received his first commission from Wizards of the Coast to illustrate a card for the Magic 2013 core set. He has since provided art for more than 100 Magic: The Gathering cards, having gained a reputation within the Magic community for his wistful, dreamlike compositions.

In 2019, Seb won the award for Best MTG Artist and is nominated again for the 2020 award. His work can be found on his website and in Gatherer.

Jenn Ravenna Tran is an illustrator and concept artist based in Seattle. She has worked in games, publishing, galleries, and comics. Additionally, Jenn is a renowned cinematographer and director.

She is nominated for Best MTG Artist of 2020. Her work can be found through Gatherer, ArtStation, or through Twitter and Instagram.

Wylie Beckert is a freelance, passionate artist who has introduced an incredible new style into Magic: the Gathering art. Her latest project is Reign of Sin and Rule of Virtue. You can find her magic art on Scryfall and her website HERE.

Magali Villeneuve has been an illustrator/Concept artist and started by painting book covers in France.

She now works for many different companies and publishing houses around the world, including Hasbro (Magic the Gathering, Dungeons and Dragons, …).

She is nominated for Best MTG Artist of 2020. Her work can be found on her website or through Gatherer.

Best MTG Artist 2020 (After Market)

Bobbi Clark (ClarkAlters) hand paints Magic: the Gathering cards. She takes care painting each card ensuring they are never warped and the paint is as flat as possible. Her work can be seen on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

Jeff Laubenstein has worked for several major Fantasy Game companies, including FASA, White Wolf, and Wizards of the Coast. He has been working in the field since the mid 80s. He was the art director on the Earthdawn project and the art director at FASA for almost a decade. He has done illustrations for Magic: The Gathering.

This year he is nominated for Best MTG Artist (After Market) for his Goblin Pendemic series, where he has created a personalized goblin token for fans everyday since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. This has been going strong since March 2020. His work can be found on Gatherer, Twitter and Instagram.

CandyGandhi Alters creates beautiful foil peel alters that have a unique fantastic look. They are nominated for Best MTG Artist (After Market) 2020 and can be found on Facebook and Instagram.

Mllizavx MTG Alters: I’ve been altering professionally since 2019, from Chicago south suburbs of Illinois. I am a part time Pharmacist and part time artist. Though art is my passion now and while growing up, I also loved science and helping people, which led me to becoming a pharmacist. Now that my children are a little older, I found more time for me to follow my passion and started painting and drawing again. MSJAlters (Maria) has been painting MTG cards since 2014. She hails from Denmark and is a lifelong lover of crafts and arts of all kinds.

I make MTG beautiful, or at least I try to. If you’re here wondering if I sell proxies (cards with WOTC intellectual property in them), I do not. I do have Playtest card Tiers with non-infringing versions of some of MTG’s most iconic cards.

I’ve been playing since 1995 and creating visual content since 2010. You may have seen some of my work on Command Zone, The Magic Show, Tolarian Community College, Brainstorm Brewery, MagicMics, and MTGGoldfish to name a few.

Meghan Burden (Sheepwave) is an independent artist and Twitter personality who uses a range of styles not normally found on magic cards. From 3d animation and pixel art to synthwave and Saturday morning cartoon styles, Meghan’s art is best described as eclectic and electric. Her work can be found on her website and Twitter.

Lindsay (Hurley Burley Studio) is a self-taught painter from Deleware who hopes to bring a little happiness to the Magic community with their unique works of art, MtG alters and other nerdy creations. Their work can be found HERE.

Baypaintstudios (Rachel Kester) is based out of Florida. She was introduced to MTG and started painting altered cards in 2018. Along with card alteration, Rachel is an accomplished graphic designer, illustrator, and pet portrait artist. When she’s not in the studio, Rachel spends time around the barn working with her rescue animals.

Cardboard Crack is a comic dedicated to the world’s most addictive game, Magic: The Gathering! It’s been online since March 2013, and has posted well over a thousand comics in that time.

Luey Dragons MTG Alters works in all sorts of mediums – oils, acrylics, fine-liners, textas, biro, pencil and basically any medium that produces the desired effects.
They have been painting for most of their life and have a love of art. “There is magic to be found in every alter and I love finding the gold in every card I do.”
